Glass Ionomer and Sealing the Teeth

Sometimes, people need something to paste on the teeth for protection. Like any other part of the body, teeth also need care and a bacteria-free environment. Thus, the sealants play the role of the shield. Now, when it comes to teeth sealant, there are different types. Thanks to technology and science, now you have glass ionomer sealants as well.

What is Glass Ionomer Sealant?

The Glass Ionomer Sealant is one of the lasts innovative creations of dentists. Well, before the invention of glass ionomer, the dentist uses resin-based sealants. But, now it is time for something new, so the glass sealants are here. When a person’s teeth, especially permanent molar develop a cavity, then they need a solution to remove the infection and safeguard the oral health from any further problem. Glass sealants are invisible and play a vital role in the protection of enamel. Due to this protective layer, your teeth do not have any contact with the bacteria and acid. Well, when it comes to the formula of glass sealants, they use a different and high-quality formula than resin-based sealants.

Glass Ionomer

Glass ionomer has three primary elements of information. Dentists have used glass powder, water, and liquid acid. The liquid acid mixes with the glass powder and water, then it makes a thick sticky substance. Dentists make your teeth clean before the application of glass sealant. Well, after that they paste the sticky solution on your teeth. It allows water to pass through the formula. Moreover, the surface of the teeth should be wet for the applying of a glass ionomer solution. However, the case with the resin-based sealants is different. The dentist cleans the enamel and makes them dry. For the application of resin-based sealants, the dentist needs a dry surface. Moreover, it repels water, it does not allow water or liquid to pass. On the other hand, glass ionomer is different. It can pass the liquid and get organically dissolved in the mouth. Well, this is why it has a disadvantage. It does not allow permanent protection to your enamel and mouth against decay. Teeth can catch infection at any time after the treatment.

Sealing Teeth with Glass Ionomer

Proper application of the sealant is necessary. It needs expert hands; thus, a dentist can only perform this duty. If a dentist does not paste the glass ionomer fully on the teeth, it can create high threats for decay. The formula should stick fully on the teeth. Otherwise, the roots will catch infection again in no time. Sometimes, people think that this was not the right solution for them. But, the actual cause of facing the same problem is amateur hands.

First, preparation of the teeth is necessary. Before applying the formula, the teeth need to get ready. In the case of resin-based sealant, you need to make the surface dry. And in the case of glass ionomer, make the teeth wet. Then, make sure you are covering all the teeth and making them shine. To control the decay, you need to apply and cover the entire jaw. You will have to paste the sticky substance on the inner sides of the teeth as well. Now, the dentist needs to harden the surface. For this aim, they can use their fingers or a small tool. Usually, hands are enough to harden the solution. But, in a few cases, they use a UV light to fix the sealant. The setting takes a few minutes. However, a patient should open the mouth until the solution gets dry. The setting will take 15 to 20 minutes.

After having the glass ionomer treatment, the person must use fluoride toothpaste. You cannot ignore the importance of fluoride after having sealant treatment. For strong and healthy teeth, you need fluoride toothpaste.
